Many people assume gas is only consumed during actual driving and forget that gas is used as long as the engine is on, such as when it’s idle. Due to how combustion engines are designed, excluding some hybrid designs, there is a considerable amount of gas consumed to keep the engine running. Google News:car

Because people consistently underestimate the implications of a change in technology—are you listening, Kodak, Blockbuster, Borders, Sears, etc.?—and because many industries face the kind of disruption that may beset the auto industry, I’m going to do a series of blogs on the ripple effects that the driverless car may create. I’m hoping both to dramatize the effects of a disruptive technology and to illustrate how to think about the dangers and the opportunities that one creates.

If you're like most people, paying cash to buy a new car just isn't in the realm of possibility. And even if it's in the realm, you may not want to deplete your savings account to buy a new vehicle. This means that you're either going to be leasing the car, or buying the car by financing it. If you're buying, then you're probably financing it through the dealership, a bank or credit union, an online financial institute, or maybe even a family member.
But if you're like many people, you probably need to finance your car. So in the next section, we'll look at the pros and cons of financing resources and find out how to determine the best rate.

Some small "city" cars carry only two to four people, and have very little luggage space. Other types are able to carry many passengers or heavy loads. For example, family station wagons or estate cars carry from 5 to 9 people, or fewer people with lots of luggage . A van or pickup truck is a car-like vehicle made for carrying medium sized loads; for example, goods for delivery or plumber's and builder's tools and materials. Heavy lorries are used to carry deliveries and heavy loads.
Congestion and accidents can be dangerous to other road users, for example people riding bicycles or walking, especially in an old town built when cars were few. Some 20th century towns are designed for cars as the main transport, but this can cause other problems. These include even more pollution and traffic, as everyone has to drive. Communities are divided up and separated with roads. People walking are in danger by expressways with too few foot bridges, small road bridges or other crossings. Designers now understand these problems and try to build more balanced systems.

They are attractive to customers who make only occasional use of a vehicle, as well as others who would like occasional access to a vehicle of a different type than they use day-to-day. The organization renting the cars may be a commercial business or the users may be organized as a democratically controlled company , public agency, cooperative , ad hoc grouping.

" Carpooling " or " ride sharing " refers to the shared use of a car for a specific journey, in particular for commuting to work, often by people who each have a car but travel together to save costs. However, there is a slight terminological hitch in the UK where the term car sharing (two words in this usage) is used for what in the U.S. is called " ride sharing ". Carsharing in the sense discussed in this article is a recent development in Britain, and while such plans are still more known as car clubs (a term which, in the U.S., refers strictly to a club of car hobbyists), the international term carsharing is gradually gaining currency there as well.

Benz may have invented the first modern car, and Duryea the first commercial car, but Henry Ford is the man who sold the most cars to the most people. In 1910 he began making and selling his Model T , which was a huge success. Many people could afford this car, not just the rich. Ford mass produced his Model T, meaning he made a lot of them in a short time in a factory. People say that the Model T is the car that "put America on wheels". The Model T was the most popular car of the time because it was cheap but it was still a good quality car that everyone could own.

The 1984 list price for the Testarossa on its 1985 model year introduction to the U.S. was deceptive. Despite being essentially a mass-produced car, it hit as Ferrari fever was beginning, and there were extreme markups, especially after six months or so, when people finally saw the car in person. Reportedly, few customers found one for the advertised high-five-figure price--we've heard that $110,000 and higher was more common. Eventually, the appetites of early adopters were satisfied, but by 1987 or '88, list prices had reached $135,000 and caught up to the retail market. Over six years of U.S. sales, the sticker price climbed 168 percent, gaining an average of $13,000 year.

In time, competition increases, prices come down, and reliability goes up. Let rich people like rock stars and actors buy Teslas and Volts. They’re not for you.

Yes, and few thought the smoke-belching horseless carriages would ever replace the iconic noble animals that were mankind’s best and beloved individual land transportation for over 5,000 years. Forget it. In ten years, only cranks will still be self-driving, and they’ll be viewed as social misfits and ticking time bombs on the road, much as we now view people who smoke or don’t wear seat belts. In 20 years, children won’t believe how we tolerated the carnage on our highways. The Google car is potentially as great a benefit to our daily lives and health as antibiotics or the Salk vaccine.
